The enemy was coming, they could all see it. Above the tops of the trees a giant was slowly making its way through the forest towards the open plain. The night goblins had been busy fighting the beastmen in the forest the past few weeks and the Count had let them battle it out, hoping that the victor would be sufficiently weakened for them to take them out. It would seem that the night goblins had only grown stronger from fighting the beastmen, as a small goblin tribe had joined them and with them had come a giant.
The Nordland army had chosen this position to fight from because the landscape sloped up away from the forest, giving the artillery a superior vantage point. Slowly the first black robed figures emerged from the forest, Erich heard them squeal and shout their barbarous warcries. “By Sigmar, how many are there?”, he thought as more and more appeared on the plain. Some of the black robed goblins were banging metal plates against eachother and wielding long pointy tridents handling squigs in front of them. He had heard of the beasts, but never actually seen them before. Now he understood why people feared them, the beasts were 90% mouth and could probably gobble an infant whole. Slowly the greenskin battleline assembled and some crude contraptions were set up on the flanks, boltthrowers.
Then the drums started beating, in a slow but steady pace and the sergeants of the various empire units started issuing their orders and the Nordland line slowly started moving forward. Erich saw that the pistoliers had already repositioned and were rushing for the giant, probably hoping to net a glorious kill they could boast about. The greenskin line also started to move forward, and a small group of wolfriders were heading straight for the empire artillery. “They’d be in for surprise”, Erich thought to himself. “You know the deal, men. We are supposed to take out any ranged units the goblins bring”. As spurred by his order, a group of night goblins started firing shortbows at the swordsmen who were slowly moving up. The arrows were badly aimed and the swordsmen were still out of range. The handguns however would not fall short. “Hein, you got fire command” Erich said to his second in command. “Sir yes Sir. Men take aim! And fire!”. The handguns barked and a couple of night goblin archers fell to the ground. “Reload!” Erich knew his men would keep up a hail of fire, he had trained them to perfection so they wouldn’t even need commands. Now he was going to do his job.
Erich took up his Hochland longrifle and placed it on the wooden support platform specifically made to support and stabalise his gun. Erich closed his left eye and looked through the scope that was on his gun. “Time to hunt some goblin” Erich mumbled, as he scanned the large unit of goblins. He saw a flash of green light shoot out of the mass of night goblins and he trained his sights on the source. “Bad idea”, he said and he slowly let his breath out and squeezed the trigger. He had hit the shaman in the torso and it had buckled under the impact but it was still moving with the rest of the goblins and more importantly still shooting beams of green energy out at the Greatswords. Erich reloaded his gun and took aim again, but just as he took his second shot at the night goblin shaman, a green face blinded his view and the shot missed went high. Erich could swear he could have seen a green face in a wicked grin in his scope when he took the shot. As he was reloading for the next shot, a series thundering barks went of on his left side as the Hellblaster volleygun fired its multiple barrels at the wolfriders who had thought the artillery to be easy pickings, after the smoke cleared all that was left of the wolfriders was a smattering of blood and gore on the ground.
The Wizard who had joined them finished his incantation and the squighoppers that up till now had been to busy snapping their jaws at eachother went up in a giant combustion, with one of the goblin riders flying high into the air with his robe on fire. Almost like one of the great fire rockets that the Engineers Guild launched during great celebrations in Nuln.
Erich gniffled and took aim at the huge night goblin unit again, when he spotted a group of goblins handling one of the crazed looneys to the front of the unit. Erich knew what to do and took aim at the looney. With a perfect shot he blew off the head of the fanatic just as the goblins pushed it out of the unit. The Greatswords who saw the fanatics head explode bellowed a warcry and charged the mass of night goblins. Erich reloaded his gun and started looking for a new target. The giant lay on the field in a crumpled heap with a hole in its stomach, handy work of Herr Sjuk Norris and his crew, probably the finest cannon crew in the empire, the pistoliers were now running around the greenskin boltthrowers launching shots at the goblins who were hiding behind their contraption. The goblin archer unit had taken heavy fire from his handgunners and as he took aim saw a mortar round explode right on top of them taking out almost the whole unit that was already severly depleted. The remaining goblin archers were turning tail and running back towards the forest. The swordsmen faired less well, as the squigherders squigs were ferociously chomping, there was nothing Erich could do to help them in that swirling melee. Actually, there wasn’t much they could do at all now that the melee had started in honest. But Erich already saw that victory would be theirs, the greatswords had taken some casualties but spurred on by the warrior priest of Sigmar they were cutting down swathes of goblins and the goblin mass was dwindling fast. As he looked at the melee through his scope, he saw the Warrior priest smashing the head of the biggest goblin in the unit. The effect of it was immediate as the goblins turned started fleeing. The greatswords kept up and only a few goblins got away. Now the detachment of swordsmen came to the aid of its parent unit and charged into the flank of the squig herders and even though the fighting was fierce, the swordsmen would surely overcome the beasts now.
Victory for the Empire!
